Spacial Reprieve

I have this big painting project idea that includes space and was inspired by Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon"; but, when I realized that the canvas I used was a bit too small, I decided to experiment with the crater effects and colors of the planets.
I didn't want to waste a perfectly good canvas, after all.

Thus, this came to be!

I've never really painted anything to do with space before, so I was a little nervous...
But, I think this came out really well; I especially love the Moon, the craters were painted on by dabbing a sponge with gray paint.

I'm not sure what to think about Jupiter and Mars, but I think they came out fairly well, and the comets aren't too shabby, either.

Lastly, I used a small brush and dabbed white dots on the canvas to look like little stars.
I'm not sure if I'll try more variations of stars on the final project or if I'll stick to the dabs, but I think they add a nice pop to it.

Oh, and in case you're wondering how I got such nice circles, I used a white pencil and a compass to draw them over the dry black paint.
But if you use a compass on a canvas, be very careful not to press the metal tip down too hard or you'll punch a hole in it!

It's been quite some time since my last painting, and I'm just so pleased that this turned out so nicely.
